Seed potatoes are currently available in Latvia, but the usual rush to purchase them has not yet begun, according to Aiga Kraukle, Chairwoman of the Board of the Union of Potato Growers and Processors. Speaking to the LETA news agency, she noted that planting is expected to start in about a month, with the earliest possible time being the end of April, provided the soil has warmed to at least +7…+9 degrees Celsius. Following last year’s wet weather, there were concerns about poor storage conditions for potatoes; however, Kraukle confirmed that tubers which did not rot in the autumn have managed to preserve well through the winter. Currently, sorting and certification of seed potatoes are underway.
Kraukle reported that seed potato prices have not changed dramatically this year, rising by approximately 5% compared to last year, while the increase in fuel costs has not yet affected prices. She noted that, as in previous years, some producers may plant uncertified potatoes of seed size, though she emphasized that to be officially considered seed potatoes, the material must be certified. Farmers continue to experiment with new varieties annually, but tried-and-tested options such as “Vineta” remain the most commonly grown. The Union of Potato Growers and Processors, established in 1997, focuses on uniting producers and processors, coordinating their activities to protect shared interests, and representing its members before state and other institutions both in Latvia and abroad.
