Farmers in Russia’s Kaliningrad region have fully secured their supply of seed potatoes and vegetables and have begun the spring sowing campaign. According to the regional Ministry of Agriculture, local vegetable growers are using table varieties of seed potatoes, which are specifically intended for future sale in Kaliningrad’s retail stores. While the region had previously achieved 98% self-sufficiency in seed potatoes, with plans to import the remaining deficit from other regions and compensate farmers for delivery costs, recent adverse weather created unexpected challenges.
Heavy rains in the autumn of 2025 prevented local farmers from harvesting crops on over 2,100 hectares, including those intended for the seed fund. In response, the regional government allocated 7.3 million rubles to help agricultural producers purchase seed potatoes and “borscht set” vegetables from outside the region. The Ministry emphasized that farmers are now fully supplied and have started planting. Additionally, since 2024, the region has been implementing an experimental project to grow elite seed potatoes, with the agricultural holding “Miratorg” planning to invest about one billion rubles into developing this center.
