Farmers in the Astrakhan region have begun harvesting early potato varieties, as reported by Governor Igor Babushkin. In the Kharbalinsky district—one of the region’s key potato-growing areas—agronomist Azat Karagushev’s fields yield around 200 tons per day. This season, the farm expects to harvest over 2,500 tons of early potatoes, cultivated on two-thirds of its total planted area.
Distribution and Market Impact
A portion of the harvest will be sold locally in Astrakhan, while the rest will be shipped to central and northern Russian regions. Early-season potatoes are in high demand as they help reduce reliance on imports and stabilize market prices. According to the governor, this success is partly due to state support measures.
Government Support Strengthening Agriculture
In 2025, Astrakhan has allocated 1.3 billion rubles for agricultural subsidies, with over 500 million rubles (39% of the planned amount) already distributed to farmers. Of these funds, 400 million rubles (83%) have been directed toward crop production development, ensuring continued growth in the sector.
The early potato harvest in Astrakhan highlights the region’s agricultural potential and its role in strengthening Russia’s food security. With strong government backing, local farmers are increasing productivity while reducing dependency on imported produce.
