A team from Belize’s Ministry of Agriculture, led by Minister José Abelardo Mai, is currently in Guatemala to explore new potato varieties. The delegation is visiting potato farms in Poptún, seeking varieties suitable for processing, such as those used by companies like Frito-Lay.
This initiative aims to address challenges faced by Belizean potato and carrot farmers, including limited market access and oversupply issues. By introducing high-yielding, processing-friendly Guatemalan potato varieties, the Ministry hopes to create new revenue streams for farmers.
Guatemala’s similar climate and altitude to Belize make it an ideal location to identify suitable varieties. This project aligns with the Ministry’s broader strategy to enhance the value of perishable crops, transforming challenges into profitable opportunities for farmers. The delegation will conclude their visit on January 24, having gained valuable insights from Guatemalan experts and observed successful farming practices firsthand.
