The European potato market is experiencing a slowdown in activity as major processors focus on fulfilling contracts. However, potato sellers remain optimistic and expect prices to rise further.

According to the latest IFA Potato report, demand for export potatoes has slowed in most destinations as buyers wait for prices to stabilise. However, strong demand from Spanish buyers in France is supporting the market.

In Ireland, domestic potato consumption and retail demand remain stable despite fluctuations in export destinations. Farmers are already preparing for the 2025 planting season.

However, a shortage of seed potatoes could pose serious problems for producers, especially those involved in processing potatoes. IFA experts warn that farmers who do not purchase seed potatoes in advance will face major difficulties.

“As in 2024, many producers will have to use their own seed potato stocks if new supplies are not available,” the report notes.

Prospects: price or volume?

The situation on the European potato market remains uncertain. On the one hand, processors continue to focus on contract volumes, which limits activity in the free purchase segment. On the other hand, suppliers expect prices to rise, especially against the backdrop of a potential seed shortage in 2025.

Which scenario is more likely: price increases or market stabilization? What will have a greater impact – a seed shortage or a decrease in export demand? Share your opinion in the comments!
