Uruguay: ALAP 2027 Confirms Field Day at Seed-Potato Grower Vicentina Ahead of Montevideo Congress

The 31st Congress of the Latin American Potato Association will be held in Montevideo on 19–23 April 2027. Organisers have confirmed a field day at Vicentina S.A. in San José department.

The organisers of the XXXI Congress of the Latin American Potato Association (ALAP) have confirmed that the congress field day will take place at Vicentina S.A., a potato company in San José department, about 40 minutes from Montevideo, according to an announcement published by PotatoPro on 16 September.

The congress will be held in Montevideo on 19–23 April 2027. According to the organisers, it marks the 50th anniversary of ALAP.

Vicentina takes part in Uruguay’s national seed-potato association and in national cultivar trials, the announcement says, which makes it a showcase for seed production and variety evaluation in the country.

The organisers also named Cibeles as a gold sponsor. The keynote lecture on 21 April will be given by Claudia Marcela Giletto of the National University of Mar del Plata in Argentina, on potato nutrition and fertilisation.

The information comes from the organisers and has not been confirmed by a second source.

Context

ALAP brings together researchers, breeders, seed producers and companies from across Latin America every few years. POTATOES NEWS reported in May that Uruguay would host the 31st congress. Uruguay is a small potato producer by regional standards but has an organised seed sector and expanded its autumn potato area by 18% in 2026.

Why it matters

ALAP is the main scientific and industry meeting for the potato sector in Latin America. The choice of a seed-potato company for the field day puts seed production and variety trials at the centre of the 2027 programme. For companies selling seed, crop protection, fertiliser or machinery in the region, the congress is a chance to meet researchers and growers from across the continent in one place; early planning for participation and sponsorship is advisable. For readers outside the region, the field day will also be a rare chance to see Uruguayan seed-potato production and cultivar testing first-hand.
