For the first time, Kazakhstan is launching an integrated full-cycle system for producing virus-free seed potatoes — from laboratory diagnostics and propagation to the production of minitubers and high-reproduction seed material. The project is being implemented by the Kazakh Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing in partnership with South Korea’s Vitrosys Agricultural Incorporation, according to the press service of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Agriculture. Total investments will reach up to $10 million, covering the supply of modern equipment, technology transfer, and infrastructure development. The South Korean side will provide technologies for rapid and mass in vitro propagation of virus-free plants, as well as methods for sanitation and minituber production. Scientists from both countries will work together to adapt advanced biotechnologies to local conditions and train Kazakh specialists in modern seed production.

Kazakhstan’s annual demand for high-quality seed potatoes is estimated at 450,000–480,000 tons, including 1,600–1,900 tons of original seeds and 11,000–12,000 tons of elite seeds. Once the project reaches full capacity, production volumes will nearly cover the country’s entire need for seed potatoes of categories G1, G2, and G3. According to the project roadmap, by 2027 the facility will produce 200,000 virus-free in vitro plants and approximately 1.2 million minitubers. By 2028, production of G1 seed potatoes will reach about 1,200 tons, rising to 1,500 tons in 2029, and by 2030 the project will operate at full industrial capacity, producing approximately 3,900 tons of G1 seed potatoes annually — a major step toward ensuring food security and reducing the country’s import dependence.
