In a significant move towards agricultural innovation, Branston, a leading national potato supplier, is gearing up for the full-scale production and commercialization of potato protein in early 2024. The recent appointment of Tom Seagrief as the General Manager for the protein extraction facility marks a pivotal moment in this first-of-its-kind UK project.

Tom Seagrief, returning to Branston with extensive experience in the food industry, expressed excitement about leading the protein extraction facility. The facility, a result of Branston’s multi-million investment and collaboration with RootExtracts Ltd, has been in development since 2013, progressing from lab-based research to a commercially-viable operation.

The project aims to optimize technologies within the factory, converting large volumes of low-value by-products into a functional protein. This strategic approach aligns with Branston’s mission to utilize all crops efficiently, ensuring a sustainable return throughout the supply chain.

Jim Windle, the managing director of Branston, highlighted the value of Tom Seagrief’s production knowledge and experience in high-care food factory environments. The potato protein, expected to be officially introduced to the market in early 2024, is positioned as a highly nutritious and natural ingredient with versatile applications. Its properties, including binding, gelatinization, and emulsification, make it suitable for various food types such as baking products, plant-based meat alternatives, and the deli sector.

As the factory gears up for the official opening, the focus shifts to recruitment and product optimization. The pre-production phase involves rigorous testing, and collaboration with potential customers ensures readiness for full-scale production.

Branston’s investment and dedication to the potato protein project reflect a commitment to sustainable agriculture and innovation. The impending launch of the UK’s first potato protein factory signifies a transformative step in the food manufacturing industry, offering a highly nutritious and versatile ingredient with broad applications.
