The Ecuadorian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (MAGP) has successfully conducted a strategic operational initiative in the province of Azuay, specifically targeting the improvement of potato crop yields. This operation represents a significant step in the government’s ongoing effort to modernize agricultural data collection and provide farmers with the tools necessary for more efficient production.
A Data-Driven Approach to Potato Farming
The operation was centered in the canton of Paute, a key hub for potato cultivation in the Azuay region. The primary objective of the initiative is to generate precise, georeferenced, and objective information regarding the productivity of this essential crop.
By utilizing a rigorous technical methodology, field teams from the Ministry’s District Directorate in Azuay collected comprehensive data directly from local producers. This information encompasses various socio-economic and technical factors that directly influence yield, such as soil management, seed quality, and regional farming practices. These samples will be analyzed by the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP) at the Santa Catalina Experimental Station, ensuring that the findings meet high scientific standards.
Empowering Decision-Making
Alejandro Delgado, the District Director of the MAGP in Azuay, emphasized that this annual operation is an essential tool for understanding the current state of potato production in the province. “The goal is to provide a clear characterization of both the producer and the production itself,” Delgado noted.
The data gathered is not merely for statistical purposes; it is integrated into the Public Agricultural Information System (SIPA). This system makes accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information accessible to farmers, technicians, academics, and policymakers. By bridging the information gap, the Ministry aims to facilitate better agricultural planning, optimize decision-making processes for producers, and ultimately strengthen the potato sector—a cornerstone of both the local economy and national food security.
