South Africa: Dr Norman Muzhinji, a Plant Pathologist Working on Microbial Solutions for Potato Diseases, Joins the Potato Expert Panel

Dr Norman Muzhinji of the University of the Free State, who researches microbial solutions for potato diseases such as Rhizoctonia and Fusarium, joins the Potato Expert Panel by Potatoes.News.

Dr Norman Muzhinji, Senior Lecturer in Plant Pathology at the University of the Free State (UFS) in South Africa, has joined the Potato Expert Panel by Potatoes.News. He leads the Soil Microbial Ecology Research Group and works on microbial solutions for plant health.

Fungal diseases of potato and other crops

His research addresses important fungal pathogens, including Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium spp., Alternaria spp. and Neopestalotiopsis spp., which affect potato, strawberry and other horticultural crops.

Microbes as a tool for plant health

Muzhinji integrates plant–microbe interactions, microbial genomics, metagenomics, bioinformatics and microbial community ecology. The aim is to use beneficial microorganisms for biological control, plant growth promotion and better soil health, and to understand how disease develops in the field.

WHY IT MATTERS

Disease control in potatoes is increasingly under pressure to reduce chemical use. For growers and seed producers, research on microbial solutions can complement chemical management and help protect yields, especially for diseases such as Rhizoctonia and Fusarium. Muzhinji joins the panel as a plant pathologist from Africa, alongside the South African scientist introduced in our panel launch article.

Join the panel

Potatoes.News invites potato professionals from any country to join the Potato Expert Panel. To apply, write to v.kovalev@potatoes.news with a short biography (80–150 words), your areas of expertise, your country and organisation, and a portrait photo. The panel is the first step towards an international network of potato professionals that we are building together with the International Potato Tour.
