Where the week’s coverage concentrated
Harvesting was the dominant theme (54 articles), followed by agronomy (30), seed potatoes (28), storage (17) and processing (17). Geographically, Europe led with 67 stories, Asia followed with 31, and the Americas with 17 — a pattern that mirrors the northern-hemisphere harvest moving into its final phase while the CIS market enters pricing season.
Highlights from the week
Central Asia in focus. Kazakhstan reported potato prices falling 6.9% within a single week, while neighboring Kyrgyzstan saw field potato prices drop below production cost — even as At-Bashy growers prepared export shipments to Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan itself added potatoes to its new state farm insurance system as the country’s 2027 self-sufficiency deadline approaches.

Russia and Belarus. Russia’s total sown area fell 2.8%, with farmers signaling caution about 2027 vegetable plantings; meanwhile Miratorg’s Bryansk potato complex anchored new regional processing capacity. Belarus moved on two fronts — building its largest ethylene-based potato storage facility to secure processing supply, and attracting a $100,000 investment bid to launch the CIS’s first washed-potato production in eco-friendly kraft packaging.
Harvest results elsewhere. Montenegro’s potato harvest slipped 1.8% to 32,588 tonnes with yields near 17 t/ha. Ecuador’s output fell 15.6% to 221,187 tonnes as harvested area shrank by almost a quarter. Tunisia confirmed it imports up to 90% of seed for a crop of about 350,000 tonnes — one of the starkest seed-dependency ratios we track.
Valorization. The EU starch industry’s 6 million cubic meters of potato juice — long a disposal problem — is yielding protein worth recovering, a story we see as a marker of where processing margins are heading.
