Potato prices have risen at the Carabayllo model market in Lima, with the yellow potato selling at between S/4 and S/5 per kilogram, as traders link the increases to the effects of the El Niño phenomenon on production, supply and food marketing, Panamericana Televisión reported.

By variety, Yungay potatoes are trading between S/2 and S/2.50 per kilogram, while a variety identified by vendors as "papa peruana" reaches around S/4 per kilogram. The differences reflect variety, quality, origin and the supply conditions of each stall.

The increase extends beyond potatoes. Traders reported substantial rises in onion, tomato, carrot, celery, leek and squash. Carrots, for example, moved from S/1.50 to S/2.80 per kilogram, while tomatoes sell at around S/5 per kilo depending on the variety, with boxes trading between S/90 and S/100.

Onion prices showed wide dispersion: some vendors reported an increase of S/0.50, while others cited a move from S/1.20 up to S/3 per kilogram.

Vendors said higher restocking costs are forcing them to pass part of the increase on to the final consumer in order to preserve working capital.

Price development over the coming weeks will depend on the climatic impact on producing zones, the regularity of arrivals at markets, and transport and marketing costs.
