“We can’t rely on synthetic fertilizers or pesticides,” says Kevin Nickel, who oversees seed variety development. “Instead, we breed varieties that withstand droughts, high water, and pests. This has made us better farmers overall.”

In its early organic farming days, Kroeker Farms started with older, nutrient-depleted fields. Today, those same fields are among the most nutrient-dense, thanks to sustainable practices that restore soil health. Nickel and his team manage over 100 potato varieties, planning up to nine years ahead to ensure high-quality seed production. Early-generation seed potatoes, grown and harvested by hand in Saskatchewan, form the foundation of their operations, enabling disease-free and resilient crops.

As one of Canada’s pioneers in organic farming, Kroeker Farms played a crucial role in defining national organic standards. Starting in the late 1990s, they worked with third-party certification bodies like EcoCert and CCOF to ensure their products met the highest standards.
