Kazakhstan is intensifying its fight against land degradation by placing soil conservation at the core of its climate and agricultural strategy, according to Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS. As part of a nationwide approach to land monitoring, the country has established a unified soil service. Authorities have already updated soil data across 53.5 million hectares using digital mapping systems. Vice-Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mansur Oshurbayev stated that land use is becoming a critical tool for climate adaptation. He noted that the country’s updated policy prioritizes soil-protection technologies, the expansion of regenerative agricultural methods, and more efficient water resource management. These measures are expected to improve soil health and help local farmers meet stricter environmental standards on international markets.
A key pillar of the strategy is the development of carbon farming, aimed at increasing soil carbon content. Experts emphasize that soil carbon plays a vital role in climate regulation, maintaining fertility, and ensuring the resilience of agricultural systems. Kazakhstan views carbon farming as a promising way to combine environmental protection with economic growth, offering a model that enhances productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By integrating soil health into its climate agenda, the country seeks to build a more sustainable and competitive agricultural sector.
