Karelia Kicks Off Vegetable and Potato Harvest Season with Early Varieties and Export Plans

The harvest season for vegetables and potatoes has officially begun in the Republic of Karelia, according to the region’s Ministry of Agriculture. Farmers are currently gathering early potato varieties such as ‘Queen Anna,’ ‘Aurora,’ and ‘Gala,’ along with zucchini and beets, with the largest volumes coming from the Sortavala and Olonets districts. This year’s total vegetable output is projected to reach around 5,000 tons, with part of the produce destined for local fairs and retail chains, while a significant share is earmarked for export outside the region.

Beyond domestic supply, Karelia is also strengthening its role in industrial agriculture. Seed potatoes from Nikolay Kontsevoy’s farm, for instance, are already being shipped to the large processing plant “Vi Fry” in the Lipetsk region, where they are transformed into french fries. This dual focus on local markets and interregional partnerships underscores the republic’s growing agricultural capacity and its integration into broader food supply chains.
