As the potato harvest season approaches in Lintao County, Gansu Province, farmers are working tirelessly to ensure every potato is harvested, sorted, and bagged efficiently. Thanks to the widespread adoption of mechanized farming—colloquially known as “iron cows”—farmers are reaping the benefits of modern agriculture, allowing them to significantly increase efficiency and productivity.

In the flat, high-standard terraced fields of Lian’erwan Township, a key potato-growing area in the county, machines hum continuously, digging up golden, round, and smooth potatoes. These machines are not just speeding up the harvest but also ensuring minimal crop loss, an essential factor as farmers race against the clock to collect their produce during favorable weather conditions.

Lintao County, well known for its ideal climate and soil conditions, has long relied on potato farming as a cornerstone of its local economy. This year, the county cultivated over 605,800 acres of potatoes, with 556,800 acres following standardized planting techniques, ensuring consistent quality and productivity across the region.

Technology and Standardization: A Winning Combination

Key to Lintao County’s success is its reliance on technology and standardized farming practices. The local agricultural department has implemented a comprehensive approach known as the “Seven Uniforms,” a strategy designed to enhance yields and protect crops. These include:

  1. Uniform superior seed varieties: Farmers are provided with high-quality seed potatoes, such as Long10, Jizhang12, and Qing9. This year, 2.4 million nuclear seeds were distributed to 662 households across the region.
  2. Uniform seed disinfection: Seeds are disinfected before planting to prevent diseases and ensure healthy crops.
  3. Uniform fertilization: Farmers follow prescribed fertilization formulas tailored to maximize the nutritional needs of the potatoes.
  4. Uniform planting methods: Standard planting techniques are employed to optimize plant spacing and growth.
  5. Uniform mechanized farming: Machines are used for plowing, sowing, and harvesting, reducing labor costs and increasing efficiency.
  6. Uniform pest and disease control: This year, 450 kg of pesticide was distributed to combat late blight, protecting the crops from severe damage.
  7. Uniform plastic film covering: Farmers received 2,472 rolls of thickened agricultural plastic film, which was provided directly to 3,050 households. This film helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature, essential for maximizing potato yields.

Mechanization in Action

The introduction of mechanization has been transformative for Lintao’s agricultural landscape. With machines capable of performing tasks traditionally done by hand, farmers can now cover larger areas in less time while ensuring the quality of the harvested potatoes remains high. Mechanized harvesting, in particular, has been a game-changer. Not only does it speed up the process, but it also reduces the physical strain on farmers and ensures that fewer potatoes are damaged during harvest, preserving the quality of the crop.

In addition, mechanization has increased labor efficiency, allowing farmers to reduce their reliance on manual labor, which has become increasingly scarce and expensive in rural areas. This year’s harvest, powered by machinery, has resulted in a lively scene in Lian’erwan Township, with farmers bustling to sort and bag potatoes as the machines dig them out of the ground.

Impact on Local Economy and Food Security

Potatoes remain one of Lintao’s most important crops due to their high starch content and overall resilience. The local agricultural extension office reports that the potatoes from this region, particularly those grown in Lian’erwan Township, are highly prized for their good shape and high starch content, making them ideal for both fresh consumption and processing.

To support local farmers, the agricultural technology promotion station provided a range of materials and technical assistance. Aside from the high-quality seed potatoes and pesticides, agricultural experts were dispatched to major demonstration sites to offer hands-on guidance throughout the growing season. Their support has been critical in maintaining high standards of production.

This year’s crop is expected to provide significant economic benefits to the local community. By producing high-quality potatoes at scale, farmers not only secure their income but also contribute to food security in the region. The cultivation and mechanized harvest of over 605,000 acres of potatoes will yield tons of potatoes, further solidifying Lintao County’s reputation as a key player in China’s potato industry.

Lintao County’s experience showcases the power of modern farming techniques and the benefits of mechanization in the agricultural sector. The combination of uniform standards and technological advancements has not only increased productivity but has also ensured better crop quality, benefiting both farmers and consumers. As Lintao continues to develop its potato industry, other regions may look to this model as an example of how to modernize and scale agricultural practices efficiently.
