16 Years of Breeding: North Ossetian Scientists Develop Two Drought-Resistant Potato Varieties

Scientists at Gorsky State Agrarian University in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania have developed and patented two new potato varieties, “Farn” and “Adeon,” after more than 16 years of painstaking research. The work was carried out as part of the national project “Technological Support for Food Security.” Both varieties are characterized by their resistance to heat, drought, and viral diseases, making them ideally suited for cultivation in the republic’s challenging mountainous conditions. Before receiving patents, each variety underwent rigorous double testing—first at the university and then before a state commission—and is now ready for commercial production.

According to acting regional agriculture minister Alan Makiev, developing these varieties represents a real contribution to import substitution and the republic’s food independence. The university’s scientists are now advancing innovative breeding methods using genetic markers, a technology expected to shorten the breeding cycle for new varieties from 12 to just 5-6 years. The national project’s broader goal is to develop Russia’s agricultural sector and its technological independence, ensuring the country is supplied with all necessary food products while strengthening its position in global markets. The updated national projects have been implemented by decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin since 2025.
