Four New Czech Potato Varieties Enter Official Registration in 2026

In 2026, four new potato varieties of Czech breeding were officially registered in the Czech Republic, covering both the table and processing segments. Baronka is an early table variety of culinary type AB, notable for its high yield and very slight darkening of the flesh after cooking. Bivoj is a medium-early variety intended for crisp processing, combining good virus resistance with excellent quality of the finished product. Carevna is a medium-early table variety with red skin and smooth tubers, characterised by stability and high yield, while Sangria is also a medium-early table variety, distinguished by oval tubers with red skin and a very smooth surface. Together, these four varieties expand the options available to Czech growers for fresh consumption and industrial processing alike.

Beyond the newly registered material, the VESA breeding station in Velhartice has presented the promising varieties Sabrina and Saxana — the latter featuring the yellowest flesh in the station’s assortment — as well as new hybrids currently undergoing registration trials. This ongoing pipeline of advanced breeding lines shows that Czech potato breeding continues to target specific end uses, from attractive, high-yielding table potatoes with good cooking quality to specialised processing types, while simultaneously preparing the next generation of candidates for official registration.
