Costa Rica: Over 1,150 Families Sustain Local Potato Production

Potato cultivation in Costa Rica remains a foundational pillar for the nation’s rural economy. According to industry data, more than 1,150 farming families are directly involved in growing this key staple crop, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh, high-quality produce to the domestic market.

The bulk of national potato output is concentrated in the highland regions of Cartago Province (notably along the fertile slopes of the Irazú Volcano), as well as in specific areas of San José and Alajuela provinces. Thanks to favorable microclimates and longstanding agronomic traditions, local farms manage to harvest crops almost year-round.

  • Foundation of Family Farming: Costa Rica’s potato sector is primarily driven by small and medium-sized family farms where agricultural expertise is passed down through generations.
  • Job Creation: Beyond direct growers, the industry generates thousands of indirect jobs across related operations—harvesting, sorting, transport, wholesale distribution, and processing.
  • Food Sovereignty: Local farmers cover the vast majority of domestic demand for fresh table potatoes, reducing national reliance on fresh market imports.

Current Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite steady production volumes, Costa Rican growers face several major hurdles: high costs for imported fertilizers and plant protection products, climate volatility, and competition from imported frozen French fries.

To address these pressures, industry associations alongside Costa Rica’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) are advancing initiatives to introduce resilient potato varieties, expand precision irrigation systems, and support direct marketing channels. These measures aim to boost farm profitability and safeguard the livelihoods of over a thousand local potato-growing families.
