Sales of mashed potatoes have soared in a British supermarket thanks to the opening of a new multi-million pound mash factory to meet demand. Tesco said its customers bought one million more packs of fresh ready-made puree in 2023 than in 2022, reports Sam Russell for the Press Association (PA).

As the pandemic lockdown ended and more people returned to work, the demand for fresh, ready-made purees began to rise. Demand has increased further due to the cost of living crisis, with mashed potatoes considered an inexpensive and homemade favorite. To meet this growing demand, Tesco has partnered with Branston, one of the UK’s largest potato suppliers, to introduce new gourmet mash recipes and open a state-of-the-art mash factory.

Surge in demand

Demand for mashed potatoes has increased significantly, with Tesco reporting that it sold one million more packs in 2023 compared to 2022. This surge can be explained by several factors:

  1. Lifestyle changes after the pandemic. As people returned to their busy lives after the pandemic, the convenience of prepared meals became more appealing. Mashed potatoes, everyone’s favorite food, fits perfectly into this trend.
  2. Cost of living crisis. Amid economic challenges, consumers are turning to affordable and comfort food products. Mashed potatoes, being inexpensive and filling, have become a staple food in many families.

    New machine plant

To meet this growing demand, Branston invested in a new wort plant near Lincoln. The facility, equipped with the latest world-class food production technology, has created 80 jobs and is dedicated to providing Tesco customers with high quality mashed potatoes.

    Gourmet puree recipes

Tesco and Branston have collaborated to develop new gourmet mash recipes in a bid to modernize and improve the traditional dish. Alex Edwards, Tesco’s prepared foods purchasing manager, highlighted the excitement this is causing for millions of British puree lovers.
Branston chief executive Jim Windle expressed his pride in the new venture and the updated recipes: “We are proud and thrilled to have brought the latest in world-class food technology, together with the development of restaurant-quality recipes, to lift and elevate one of the UK’s finest companies. loved food. Mung beans are one of Britain’s favorite foods and needed to be reinvented for the 21st century to delight and inspire customers with the new range.”

    Technological advances

The new wort plant uses advanced production technologies to ensure consistent quality and taste. These innovations include:

    • Precision Cooking: Advanced cooking techniques to maintain perfect texture and flavor.
    • Improved packaging: Improved packaging methods to extend shelf life without compromising quality.
    • Quality Control: Stringent quality control processes to ensure every package meets high standards.

The Tesco and Branston collaboration highlights the changing nature of food production and consumer preferences. By combining traditional comfort foods with modern technology and delicious recipes, they meet growing demand and provide consumers with high-quality, convenient options. This initiative not only responds to current market trends, but also sets a new standard for ready meals in the UK.
