The upcoming launch of a modern logistics center in Chong-Alay District, Osh Province, marks a significant milestone for potato farmers, agronomists, and agricultural stakeholders in Kyrgyzstan. The facility, located in Daroot-Korgon village, will store 400 tons of seed potatoes in two 200-ton refrigeration units, ensuring optimal preservation and reducing post-harvest losses.

Investment and Infrastructure

The project is a collaborative effort, with funding from multiple sources:

  • Osh Province: 5 million KGS
  • Chong-Alay District Administration: 5 million KGS
  • Local municipality (Ayil Okmotu): 1 million KGS
  • International NGO Good Neighbors: Over 12 million KGS (as part of a rural development initiative)

In addition to cold storage, the center features:

  • Sorting areas
  • Two refrigeration units
  • Ethylene absorbers (to prolong shelf life)
  • Industrial humidifiers
  • A 125 kW generator (ensuring uninterrupted operation)
  • An electric forklift and wooden storage crates

This infrastructure aligns with global best practices in potato storage, where temperature and humidity control are critical for minimizing spoilage (FAO, 2021).

High-Quality Seed Potato for Export Growth

A key highlight is the introduction of “Super-Super Elite” seed potatoes imported from Colombia, known for high yields and disease resistance. This variety could significantly enhance local production, addressing challenges like low productivity—Kyrgyzstan’s average potato yield is 15-18 tons/ha, compared to 40+ tons/ha in advanced EU farms (World Bank, 2020).

The center’s focus on export-oriented production could open new markets in Central Asia and beyond, leveraging Kyrgyzstan’s agro-climatic potential.

Broader Agricultural Impact

  1. Reduced Post-Harvest Losses: Proper storage can cut losses by up to 30% (FAO), crucial for smallholder farmers.
  2. Farmer Training & Support: Enhanced storage enables year-round supply, stabilizing prices and incomes.
  3. Climate Resilience: Refrigeration mitigates risks from temperature fluctuations, a growing concern under climate change.

The Chong-Alay logistics center represents a transformative step for Kyrgyz agriculture, combining infrastructure, technology, and high-quality inputs to strengthen the potato value chain. By improving storage, yield, and market access, this initiative can serve as a model for other regions. For farmers and agronomists, adopting such innovations is key to sustainable and profitable farming.
