Farmers in Russia’s Astrakhan Region have become the first in the country to launch the harvest of young potatoes this season. In a farming enterprise located in the Kharabalinsky District, where a record 32 hectares have been dedicated to this crop—three times more than last year’s figure—over 70 tons of produce are being shipped daily. In total, the farm plans to harvest 1,200 tons of early-season varieties. This rapid expansion of planted areas has been made possible through active state support: after receiving a grant of 4 million rubles, the enterprise was able to purchase two new tractors, and farmers are also being assisted in procuring high-quality seed material. In addition to potatoes, the farm specializes in growing tomatoes and peppers, with produce primarily supplied to local markets for regional residents, while surplus output is distributed across the country.
Across the entire Astrakhan Region, agricultural producers are cultivating more than 90,000 hectares of land this year, of which 12,000 hectares are allocated to potatoes. Recognizing the strategic importance of the sector for national food security, the government continues to provide substantial assistance to farmers: approximately 2 billion rubles are planned to be allocated for the development of the region’s agro-industrial complex this year. This comprehensive support enables not only increased production volumes but also ensures a stable supply of fresh produce to the domestic market, thereby strengthening Russia’s food independence and self-sufficiency.
