Reliable access to high-quality seed is the cornerstone of productivity, profitability, and resilience in the potato sector. To support this fundamental need, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Seed Potato Standard (S-1) serves as a globally recognized framework for certification and commercial quality control. Its core objective is to facilitate fair trade, enhance transparency, and promote harmonization among the diverse national and regional certification schemes worldwide. Originally developed in 1963, the Standard has continuously evolved to reflect advances in science, changes in production systems, and the growing complexities of international trade.
Following an extensive review process launched in 2022, a fully revised version of the Standard was adopted in late 2025 after broad technical consultation. The updated framework brings much-needed clarity to certification processes, inspection methodologies, disease and pest management provisions, as well as traceability and labelling requirements across the entire supply chain. A moderated panel discussion is scheduled to present the key elements of this revised Standard and explain its practical implications for certification authorities, producers, and traders. The session will highlight the rationale behind the revision, outline the main updates to seed potato requirements, and showcase implementation experiences from different regions. Through expert presentations and interactive dialogue, the event aims to support the consistent application of the Standard, encourage its wider adoption, and strengthen capacity-building for seed potato certification in international trade.
