Kyrgyzstan will begin exporting potatoes to Belarus under a new agreement signed at a business forum in Minsk, as reported by Sputnik. The deal also includes shipments of carrots, cabbage, apples, citrus fruits, and other vegetables and fruits, expanding trade opportunities for Kyrgyz farmers.

Boosting Bilateral Agricultural Trade

According to Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Agriculture, this agreement is expected to increase trade turnover and strengthen agricultural partnerships. Belarus, a major player in potato production (ranking among the top global exporters with over 6 million tons produced annually, as per FAO 2023), will now diversify its supply sources by importing from Kyrgyzstan.

Additionally, the two nations signed a memorandum on animal breeding cooperation, facilitating knowledge exchange, joint research in genetics, and breed improvement programs. Belarus has advanced expertise in livestock breeding, particularly dairy cattle, with breeds like the Belarusian Red achieving high productivity.

Market Potential and Challenges

Kyrgyzstan’s agricultural exports have been growing, with fresh produce accounting for a significant share. In 2022, the country exported over 150,000 tons of vegetables and fruits (National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan). However, meeting Belarus’s phytosanitary standards and logistical demands will be key challenges.

This agreement marks a strategic step for Kyrgyzstan in accessing new markets and enhancing agricultural productivity through collaboration. For farmers, agronomists, and agribusinesses, it presents an opportunity to expand production, adopt better breeding practices, and increase profitability. Strengthening trade ties with Belarus could also pave the way for future partnerships in agri-tech and sustainable farming.
