At the *Belagro-2025* exhibition in Minsk, scientists from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus showcased groundbreaking advancements in potato breeding, including the eye-catching “Wildberries” variety. This potato features a deep red-magenta flesh, retaining its vivid color even after cooking. More than just a novelty, it boasts high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C, making it a potential candidate for diabetic and dietary nutrition—a claim supported by growing global research on pigmented potatoes’ health benefits (FAO, 2024).

High-Yield, High-Value Varieties

Belarusian researchers are focusing on high-yielding (50-80 tons/ha), disease-resistant potato varieties while promoting eco-friendly, resource-saving cultivation methods. Alongside “Wildberries,” another standout is the “Lekar” variety, with striking purple flesh. These colorful potatoes are gaining popularity not only for their novelty but also for their nutritional superiority over traditional white-fleshed varieties.

Industrial and Consumer Demand

Unlike conventional potatoes, pigmented varieties like “Wildberries” are increasingly sought after by food processors for creating visually unique products—chips, crisps, and specialty flours—while catering to health-conscious markets. According to a 2024 Global Potato Market Report, demand for antioxidant-rich, low-glycemic potatoes is rising by 12% annually, particularly in Europe and North America.

Beyond Breeding: Sustainable Farming Innovations

The Scientific and Practical Center for Potato and Horticulture is also refining cultivation and storage technologies to minimize waste and maximize yield. Their virus-free elite seeds (super-elite category) ensure high germination rates and robust crop performance, supporting Belarusian farmers in maintaining competitive, sustainable production.

The “Wildberries” potato symbolizes a dual triumph—combining nutritional innovation with agricultural efficiency. As global interest in functional foods grows, Belarusian research positions the country as a leader in next-generation potato farming, offering farmers and agribusinesses a profitable, health-aligned crop alternative.
