Wanming Mountain’s “Southern Little Potato”: High-Altitude Miniature Variety Commands Premium Prices 3–5 Times Higher Than Ordinary Potatoes

In the misty highlands of Wanming Mountain, Xinqiao Village, Fengqing County, Lincang City, farmers are busy harvesting a unique miniature potato variety that thrives at altitudes exceeding 2,200 metres. Unlike ordinary potatoes, this indigenous landrace never grows large due to the cool, foggy climate and loose, porous soils—individual tubers remain roughly the size of nuts. Yet this very limitation gives them an exceptionally fluffy, creamy texture and rich potato aroma that is highly prized by consumers. Remarkably, the variety exhibits strong regional dependence: if transplanted to lower elevations, the potatoes enlarge but lose their distinctive quality and flavour, making them an irreplaceable high-altitude specialty. Currently, around 60 mu (approximately 4 hectares) are planted in the Wanming Mountain area, with average yields of about 500 kg per mu, totalling roughly 30,000 kg annually. Despite limited scalability, the potatoes consistently fetch retail prices of 3–5 yuan per jin (0.5 kg), compared to just 1–1.5 yuan for ordinary potatoes, with prices occasionally peaking at 8 yuan during low-yield years—delivering economic returns three times higher than conventional potato cultivation.

The local Party branch has formally included Wanming Mountain’s miniature potatoes in its village-level specialty industry development plan, guiding farmers to cultivate these heirloom varieties on high-altitude rotational and sloping lands using traditional, eco-friendly farming methods that preserve the potatoes’ original quality. A unified regional brand, “Wanming Mountain Little Potatoes,” has been established to help this premium product reach better markets. Grower Luo Shaoyun, who plants 3 mu of the crop, reports net profits of nearly 3,000 yuan per mu—more than double what traditional potatoes would yield—and notes that demand consistently outstrips supply, with merchants placing advance orders every harvest season. While the limited suitable growing area prevents rapid expansion, local officials view the “small but excellent, special and superior” niche as an ideal pathway for revitalising high-altitude land resources and boosting rural incomes. Moving forward, the village plans to moderately expand planting within suitable elevation zones while intensifying quality improvement and brand promotion, ensuring these “golden nuggets” from the mountains continue to drive prosperity through distinctive agricultural specialisation.
