Vietnam Exports Nearly 28,000 Potato Seed Tubers to India for Research Collaboration
The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lâm Đồng Province has issued a plant export license authorizing the Potato, Vegetable, and Flower Research Center to ship 27,952 potato seed tubers (Solanum tuberosum) to India, comprising 23 different varieties with quantities ranging from 60 to 3,936 tubers per variety. The entire batch was exported via Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport exclusively for research purposes, and the permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. This activity represents a significant international scientific collaboration, as testing and evaluating varietal adaptability under different ecological conditions will provide essential data for variety improvement, yield and quality enhancement, and increased resistance to climate change and pests. Potatoes are currently among the most economically important crops, and for Vietnam—particularly Lâm Đồng Province—research, development, and genetic resource exchange play a crucial role in improving production capacity, advancing modern and sustainable agriculture, and meeting growing market demands.
According to the license, state quality control does not apply to this exported seed material, but all tubers are strictly designated for research use only, with explicit conditions ensuring no negative environmental impacts on soil, water sources, other organisms, or human health. The Potato, Vegetable, and Flower Research Center, operating under the Southern Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, bears full legal responsibility for managing and utilizing the approved varieties. The licensed entity must strictly comply with plant protection and quarantine laws and other relevant legal regulations throughout the export process. Upon completion, the center is required to submit a detailed report on export results and variety usage status to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment through the Sub-Department of Plant Protection and Crop Production, ensuring full transparency and regulatory compliance.
