USA: Nearly 10,000 Bags of J. HIGGS Bacon & Cheddar Chips Recalled Over Undeclared Soy

The FDA has classified a recall of nearly 10,000 bags of J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Chips as Class II after undeclared soy was found in the product.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified a recall of J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Chips as Class II, after the product was found to contain undeclared soy, one of the nine major food allergens under US law. The classification, posted on 14 October, covers nearly 10,000 bags distributed across six states, according to The Healthy.

Saratoga Potato Chips LLC first announced the recall on 16 September, saying the undeclared soy was discovered during a review. At the time of the announcement, no illnesses or injuries had been reported, Yahoo News reported.

The recall affects 769 cases with 13 bags per case, close to 10,000 bags in total. The recalled product is:

  • J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Chips, 7.75-oz (about 220 g) bag, 13 bags per case
  • UPC: 051933316454
  • Best-if-used-by dates: 11 December 2026 and 18 December 2026

The chips were distributed in Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Maryland, and were sold at Save A Lot stores; specific store locations were not listed.

A Class II designation means the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” under the FDA classification system. For consumers with a soy allergy, however, even undeclared allergen traces pose a risk of a serious or life-threatening reaction, which is why US regulations require all major allergens to be declared on labels. Soy sits alongside milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and wheat in the FDA’s list of nine major allergens.

The case sits one step below Class I, the FDA’s most serious category, reserved for products where exposure could cause serious health consequences or death.

Consumers who bought the affected chips are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Saratoga Potato Chips with questions. The brand has faced a similar issue before: in June 2025, a J. Higgs Potato Chip Mix was recalled for undeclared milk, according to the live FDA recall list compiled by FoodReady.
