In recent years, the frequency and intensity of droughts have increased, impacting agricultural productivity. For potato farmers, water is crucial not only for maintaining plant health but also for ensuring high-quality yields. According to the European Commission’s 2023 report on water usage in agriculture, efficient water management is essential, particularly in regions with sandy soils and low rainfall. These conditions can lead to reduced crop quality and lower yields if not properly managed.

The Underground Irrigation Solution

Stiens has adopted underground drip irrigation, a system that uses hoses embedded in the soil to deliver water directly to the root zone. This method involves hoses with evenly spaced slits that release approximately 0.7 liters of water per hour. By placing these hoses underground, Stiens can provide a consistent and controlled water supply, which helps counteract the effects of drought.

The benefits of this system are supported by research from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), which indicates that drip irrigation can improve water use efficiency by up to 50% compared to traditional methods. In a study published in Agricultural Water Management in 2023, drip irrigation was shown to significantly enhance potato yields and quality under drought conditions, aligning with Stiens’ observations.

Cost and Efficiency

Currently, Stiens employs this technology on seven hectares of his farm. The cost of the drip irrigation system is notable, with each roll of hose covering approximately one hectare and costing around €1,000. Despite the initial investment, the precision of water application and the potential for increased yields make it a worthwhile consideration.

The return on investment for drip irrigation can be substantial. A 2022 study by the University of Bonn found that while the upfront costs are high, the increased yield and improved quality can offset these expenses within a few growing seasons. Additionally, the reduced water waste and lower energy costs for water pumping contribute to the system’s long-term benefits.

Underground drip irrigation presents a promising solution for potato farmers dealing with water scarcity. While the initial costs are significant, the potential for increased yields and improved crop quality can make it a valuable investment. As climate change continues to impact water availability, innovative irrigation systems like these will play a crucial role in sustaining agricultural productivity.

Farmers considering this technology should weigh the upfront costs against the potential benefits and consider how it fits into their overall water management strategy. As research and technology continue to advance, more cost-effective solutions may become available, making efficient irrigation practices increasingly accessible.
