The data confirms that EUPPA members, representing over 90% of European production, are on track to process approximately 7.5 million tons of potatoes this year. This industrial throughput is supported by a highly integrated agricultural base: across the EU27, potato cultivation spans 1.38 million hectares, yielding about 50 million tons annually, with average productivity reported at a robust 36.3 tons per hectare. This creates a direct and vital market for a significant portion of the continent’s potato harvest, underpinning a sector with an estimated $10.6 billion turnover.
Europe’s processing strength is fundamentally export-oriented. In 2024, EU27 exports of processed potato products reached a staggering $9.6 billion (6.8 million tons), with $4.3 billion (3 million tons) destined for markets outside the bloc. This export dominance is geographically concentrated; five countries—Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland—accounted for 98.2% of total EU export value. This concentration mirrors a global trend where specific regions become super-specialized exporters of high-value agricultural goods. The sector’s success relies on this tight linkage, where high and consistent raw material quality from farms feeds directly into the 51 processing facilities, which in turn supply a global network of approximately 200 countries.
