The provincial government of South Sulawesi (Pemprov Sulsel) and the Gowa Regency administration have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector by distributing 175,000 rooted potato cuttings (basic seeds) to five local seed breeders in Gowa. This initiative, linked with the First Planting of Rooted Potato Cuttings and the awarding of Seed Breeder Competency Certificates, took place in Pattapang Village, Tinggimoncong District.

A Step Toward Food Security and Eco-Friendly Farming

Gowa Regent Sitti Husniah Talenrang praised the provincial government’s efforts, emphasizing that the potato seed independence program aligns with the region’s mountainous terrain, which is highly suitable for potato cultivation.

“This is not just about agriculture but also about managing natural resources for community welfare without harming the environment. We hope this program increases farmers’ income while strengthening local food security,” said Husniah.

South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman stated that a total of 350,000 potato cuttings have been allocated across three regencies—Gowa, Enrekang, and Bantaeng—with Gowa receiving the largest share (175,000).

“Today, we begin planting in Gowa and also award competency certificates to farmers as tangible support for sustainable agriculture,” he added.

Beyond Potatoes: Expanding Sustainable Agriculture

In addition to potatoes, the provincial government plans to distribute 15,000 cocoa grafts next year to boost cocoa productivity in South Sulawesi.

Farmers’ Response: Local Seeds for Better Adaptation

One of the beneficiaries, Syamsu Marlin from Bontona Seed Breeder, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that local seeds are more adaptive to Gowa’s climate and more affordable than imported varieties.

“If we buy seeds from outside, the price is high. This assistance is very helpful, and we hope it improves our harvest yields,” he said.

Other recipients include:

  • Nur Indah & Bontomanai Breeders (Pattapang Village)
  • Kuncup Mekar Breeder (Malino Village)
  • Biringromang Breeder (Tombolopao District)

This program highlights the strong collaboration between provincial and local governments in promoting sustainable, locality-based agriculture. By providing high-quality seeds and technical support, South Sulawesi is not only enhancing food security but also ensuring that farming practices remain eco-friendly and economically viable for smallholders.

With climate change posing increasing challenges, such initiatives are crucial in building resilient agricultural systems that benefit both farmers and the environment.
