Students of the Institute of Agrobiotechnology Harvest Over 23 Tonnes of Potatoes
The Field Experimental Station of the Russian State Agrarian University — с is continuing its annual potato harvest, with students from the Institute of Agrobiotechnology taking part in the work. The event is an important historical tradition of the academy, allowing students to reinforce their theoretical knowledge directly in the field. This year, participants represented key areas of study, including agronomists, biotechnologists, agrochemists, and soil scientists. Such interdisciplinary collaboration ensures a comprehensive approach to evaluating the harvest — from analysing soil conditions and applying agrochemicals to the biotechnological assessment of varieties and the final characterisation of the harvested tubers. To date, students have collected more than 23 tonnes of potatoes.
The experimental plots at the Field Experimental Station grow early-maturing potato varieties of domestic selection, including Zhukovsky Ranny, Snegir, Nevsky, Golubizna, Ryabinushka, Udacha, and Meteor. The subsequent distribution of the harvest traditionally follows several directions. Part of the grown potatoes will be used to prepare meals at the university’s dining facilities. The best specimens are preserved as seed material for planting next year’s crop. A batch of commercial potatoes will soon go on sale, allowing all interested buyers to taste products produced by the Timiryazev Academy. The Field Experimental Station of the Russian State Agrarian University — Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy is the country’s oldest research institution — the “cradle” of Russian agronomy. It was founded in 1867. Today, the station is a powerful teaching, methodological, production, and research base of the university (a training and experimental farm). Its area covers about 50 hectares, where hundreds of field experiments are conducted annually under the guidance of the university’s leading scientists.
