Scientists of Tyumen State University Prepare New Potato Variety “Nadezhda Sibiri” for State Trials
Researchers at the Agrarian Institute of Tyumen State University (TyumSU) are preparing a promising new potato variety, “Nadezhda Sibiri” (Hope of Siberia), for state variety testing. If successfully registered, it will become the university’s second variety included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements, following the earlier “Tyumensky” variety. The work is part of a comprehensive project covering the full cycle — from evaluating breeding material and selecting promising lines to producing certified seed potatoes and developing cultivation technologies. The research is conducted in collaboration with leading scientific centers in Russia, Belarus, and China.
The scientists presented their progress at a meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Department of Agro-Industrial Complex of Tyumen Oblast. As emphasized by the institute’s director, Ekaterina Pridannikova, a scientific result becomes truly valuable only when it proves its effectiveness in real production. The next stage involves expanding collaboration with agricultural producers to test new varieties under actual farm conditions, taking into account specific technologies used on enterprises and gathering data to further improve breeding efforts. The project aims to develop potato varieties adapted to the climatic conditions of Western Siberia, advance seed production technologies, and introduce scientific innovations into the regional agro-industrial complex.
