The Sakhalin Region is actively developing domestic seed production as a strategically important direction for enhancing food and economic security. The work is being carried out under the national project “Technological Support for Food Security,” initiated by President Vladimir Putin. According to the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Trade, last year the region’s supply of domestically bred seeds reached 70%, with priority given to potatoes. Today, the Sakhalin Region has nearly achieved the target set by the Food Security Doctrine for potatoes — 95% self-sufficiency.
To maintain this level of self-sufficiency, a special project has been launched to fully meet local farmers’ needs for quality planting material. Specialists have already conducted agroecological trials of 37 potato varieties: five varieties of domestic breeding from “SeDeK,” 13 varieties from the “DokaJin” breeding and genetic center, and 19 potato varieties from Belarusian breeding. With the support of Governor Valery Limarenko and the Sakhalin regional government, agricultural producers receive subsidies when purchasing domestic seeds — compensating up to 90% of the cost.
