Russia: Total Sown Area Falls 2.8% as Farmers Signal Caution on 2027 Vegetable Plantings

Rosstat reports total sown area down 2.8% to 77.3 million hectares in 2026, with open-ground vegetables shrinking to 437,000 ha; analysts doubt growers will expand plantings in 2027.

Russia’s total sown area fell 2.8% in 2026 to 77.3 million hectares, down from 79.5 million a year earlier, according to updated Rosstat data published in August. The pullback extends across the vegetable complex: open-ground vegetables now occupy 437,000 hectares, down from 461,000 in 2025, while sugar beet plantings slipped to 1.15 million hectares from 1.2 million.

Potato plantings across all farm categories stand at 968,000 hectares, down 1.9% year on year and the lowest level in 18 years for the commercial sector.

The reduction follows the classic cycle of this market: the record 2023 crop crashed prices, farmers cut area in 2024, output recovered in 2025 — and shrank again in 2026. Retail prices for the so-called “borscht set” of staple vegetables were running 20–38% above year-ago levels in late August, according to Rosstat data cited by Kommersant, with potatoes up 35.3% and cabbage up 35.2%.

Whether higher prices will bring area back in 2027 is doubtful. Artem Suvorov, project lead for the consumer and agribusiness practice at Strategy Partners, told Kommersant that growers are unlikely to expand vegetable and potato plantings significantly next year: after two boom-and-bust cycles, farms will act cautiously rather than risk another round of overproduction and price pressure. Rising costs for seed, fertilizer, storage, fuel and labor — the latter tightened by migration policy — further limit the appetite for expansion.

For the potato sector, the signal is structural rather than seasonal: even a profitable 2026 may not reverse the acreage decline, keeping the market balanced on a smaller production base and leaving winter prices dependent on storage capacity and import flows.
