Regenerative Farming Finds Its Roadmap: “Routes to Regen” Launches in the UK
The Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) has launched a bold new program, “Routes to Regen,” in the East of England, aiming to make regenerative agriculture a realistic and profitable choice for UK farmers. Spearheaded by industry leaders such as McCain Foods, McDonald’s, Lloyds Banking Group, Waitrose, and Barclays, the initiative is designed to tackle key challenges in regenerative farming adoption—most notably financial risk, lack of technical support, and fragmented resources.
This comes at a crucial time, as the global food system is responsible for nearly 30% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, and is the leading driver of nature loss, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Despite growing awareness of regenerative farming’s environmental benefits—improved soil health, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity restoration—many farmers still hesitate due to economic and operational uncertainties.
The Problem: Adoption Barriers in Regenerative Agriculture
The SMI Agribusiness Hub’s 2022 action plan identified five major barriers:
- High transition costs
- Complex and inconsistent policy frameworks
- Unclear supply chain incentives
- Lack of measurement metrics
- Unstable income models
These challenges often leave farmers—particularly smaller operations—without the confidence or resources to make the switch.
The Solution: Routes to Regen’s Support Framework
The Routes to Regen Lighthouse Project is built around a whole-farm support system, managed by The Royal Countryside Fund with on-farm advisory support from Ceres Rural. The program delivers:
1. Financial Support
- Discounted access to capital
- Business planning guidance
- Supply opportunities for rotational crops
- Subsidized seeds for cover crops and pollinators
- Weather insurance
- Strategic advice for utilizing public funding (e.g., DEFRA’s Environmental Land Management schemes)
2. Technical Support
- Access to trial data and scientific insights
- Discounted soil testing and data tools
- Connections to local livestock farmers for integrated systems
3. Peer-to-Peer Support
- Field demonstration days
- Farmer networking and knowledge sharing events
This practical, farmer-centric approach is being piloted with real farmers in 2025, with ambitions to expand regionally and globally in future phases.
Regenerating Together: A Global Framework for Local Action
The project also serves as a real-world testbed for the SAI Platform’s “Regenerating Together Framework”, a globally aligned system developed to standardize regenerative agriculture metrics and outcomes. This framework supports clear measurement, monitoring, and evaluation, making it easier to scale the impact across regions and commodities.
Strategic Collaboration: The Power of Public-Private Partnerships
The project brings together a unique alliance of stakeholders from across the food, finance, and insurance sectors—including ADM, British Sugar, Cranswick, Farm Carbon Toolkit, Muntons, Wildfarmed, and the Soil Association Exchange.
Importantly, the SMI network of over 250 CEOs worldwide offers unmatched potential to replicate the model in other geographies. With joint investment and knowledge sharing, the initiative can become a blueprint for how regenerative agriculture can thrive—commercially and ecologically.
Routes to Regen is more than a pilot project—it’s a working model for how regenerative farming can be scaled through collective action. By providing structured support, reducing financial risk, and using measurable frameworks, it gives farmers the tools they need to future-proof their operations while restoring soil, biodiversity, and climate balance. As climate challenges grow, this type of initiative could be the future of sustainable farming—in the UK and beyond.
