In a significant leap forward for Pakistan’s agricultural sector, a partnership with South Korea has been established to produce high-quality seed potatoes using aeroponics—a revolutionary method of plant cultivation that eliminates the need for soil. This new collaboration is poised to help Pakistan increase its potato production while reducing its reliance on costly seed imports. With the agriculture sector being a key contributor to Pakistan’s economy, this initiative stands as a major advancement in sustainable farming.

Aeroponics: A Sustainable Farming Solution

Aeroponics is a method where plants are grown in an air or mist environment with minimal water usage, making it an ideal solution for modern urban farming and vertical agriculture. This technique not only conserves water but also promotes faster growth, yielding healthier crops with fewer resources. With Pakistan’s increasing potato production, this method promises to significantly improve the quality and quantity of seed potatoes, a critical component for sustainable farming.

Pakistan ranks as the ninth-largest producer of potatoes globally, with a production increase of more than 35% over the last three years. The country’s output surged from 5.87 million tons in 2020-21 to an estimated 8.01 million tons in 2022-23. However, despite the vast acreage devoted to potato cultivation, Pakistan still faces a major challenge: the country imports between 6,000 to 12,000 tons of seed potatoes annually due to the poor quality of domestically produced seeds.

A Joint Initiative for Improved Seed Production

The new initiative, the Seed Potato Production and Aeroponics Complex, is a joint project between the Korea Partnership for Innovation in Agriculture (COPIA) and the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC). This partnership aims to use aeroponics technology to produce certified seed potatoes in Pakistan. The infrastructure of the project includes four state-of-the-art aeroponic greenhouses, 35 screen houses, and a cold storage facility, all powered by a 100-kW solar system, ensuring sustainable and energy-efficient operations.

Aeroponic cultivation has proven to be highly productive, with traditional potato farming yielding only five tubers per plant, while the aeroponic system can produce between 50 to 60 tubers per plant. The advantages of this method are clear: significantly higher yields, improved seed quality, and reduced dependence on imported seeds, which ultimately lowers the cost of production.

Impact on Pakistan’s Potato Industry

This collaboration is expected to address the challenge of poor-quality seed potatoes in Pakistan, enabling the country to produce its own high-quality seed stock for domestic use and potential export. The goal is to improve potato yields, reduce production costs, and lower the nation’s heavy import bill for seed potatoes.

With the establishment of the modern aeroponic center, Pakistani farmers will no longer need to rely on external sources for high-quality seeds. This initiative is seen as a game-changer for the agricultural industry, improving productivity and creating opportunities for Pakistan to become a net exporter of potatoes in the future.

Future Prospects for Pakistan’s Agricultural Sector

The partnership between Pakistan and South Korea extends beyond seed potato production. It is part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s agriculture through innovation and the adoption of advanced technologies. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, highlighted the significance of the project, stating that it would empower local farmers and boost the overall productivity of the agricultural sector.

In addition to the aeroponic potato initiative, Pakistan has also inaugurated the National Institute for Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology, a state-of-the-art research facility focused on plant, animal, and microbial genomics. This demonstrates the country’s commitment to advancing agricultural research and fostering innovation in the sector.

The collaboration between Pakistan and South Korea marks a major milestone in the development of sustainable and efficient farming practices in Pakistan. By introducing aeroponics to seed potato production, this initiative holds the potential to revolutionize the country’s potato industry, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality seeds, increasing crop yields, and reducing dependency on imports. As the project progresses, it could pave the way for further advancements in agricultural technology, benefiting farmers and contributing to the long-term growth of Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
