New Precision Ethylene Treatment technology promises to optimize potato storage, ensuring superior quality and reduced weight loss with advanced control mechanisms.

Restrain has unveiled its latest advancement in potato preservation technology with the introduction of Precision Ethylene Treatment (PET). This cutting-edge system is designed to ensure optimal storage conditions for potatoes by leveraging precise applications of Ethylene, a natural plant hormone essential for maintaining quality and freshness.

Ethylene, a colorless gas found naturally in plants, influences key physiological processes such as ripening, aging, and stress responses. For over twenty years, Restrain has utilized Ethylene to enhance potato storage, keeping potatoes free from sprouting and maintaining their quality throughout storage and transportation. With the recent ban on CIPC in Europe in 2020, Restrain has become a leading solution for both french fry manufacturers and fresh potato suppliers, addressing concerns related to fry color and weight loss effectively.

The new Precision Ethylene Treatment (PET) technology represents a significant leap forward in potato storage innovation. Launched in Autumn 2024, PET technology introduces a series of advancements designed to optimize Ethylene levels in storage environments. This ensures that potatoes are not only free from sprouting but also retain their ideal sugar levels and fry color while minimizing weight loss.

Key components of the PET technology include:

  • The Sensor: The newly engineered Ethylene sensor offers unparalleled accuracy and response time. It eliminates interference from other molecules, providing the most precise continuous Ethylene monitoring system. Additionally, it measures carbon dioxide, temperature, and relative humidity, ensuring comprehensive environmental control.
  • The Pulse: This ultra-low dosing pulse system administers controlled Ethylene at parts per billion, below the detection threshold of the sensor. This method prepares potatoes for higher Ethylene concentrations, effectively suppressing sprouting while minimizing respiration to protect fry color and reduce weight loss.
  • The Control: The sophisticated Ethylene control management system uses advanced algorithms to maintain precise Ethylene levels within commercial storage facilities. This ensures optimal conditions for potato preservation.

The Precision Ethylene Treatment technology offers several key benefits:

  1. Accurate Ethylene Control: Utilizes the latest software and sensor technologies for precise Ethylene management, preventing overexposure and ensuring consistent quality.
  2. Protection of Fry Color: Maintains high-quality fry color through accurate Ethylene level regulation.
  3. Reduction in Fuel Consumption: Lowers operational costs and environmental impact by optimizing energy use.
  4. Gentle Treatment: Preserves potato quality from storage to market by minimizing weight loss and avoiding harsh treatment methods.
  5. Patent-Pending Technology: Represents the forefront of innovation in potato preservation, offering farmers a reliable solution for sprout suppression and quality maintenance.

Benedikt Cramer, Managing Director of Restrain, emphasized the impact of these advancements, stating, “Our ongoing research and newly patented systems drive continuous improvements, reinforcing our leadership in Ethylene management for potato storage. The introduction of PET technology marks a new chapter in our commitment to providing cost-effective, natural solutions for potato preservation.”

As Restrain continues to lead in potato storage technology, the PET system promises to set new industry standards, offering farmers and suppliers a state-of-the-art solution for maintaining potato quality and optimizing storage efficiency.
