Punjab Agricultural University Rolls Out Four Potato Varieties: Yield up to 184 Quintals per Acre, Early Harvest and Late-Blight Options

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has expanded its potato varietal portfolio with four Punjab Potato varieties — PP-101, PP-102, PP-103 and PP-104 — giving growers options based not only on yield but also on crop duration, early market opportunities and resistance to late blight, Indian Potato reported on October 5, 2026. The varieties, developed by the university's Department of Vegetable Science, are now available for seed through PAU.

Punjab Potato-102, released in 2023, is the highest-yielding of the four: a main-season table variety averaging 184 quintals per acre, with light-brown, oval-round, shallow-eyed tubers and creamy-yellow flesh. Punjab Potato-101, also from 2023, averages 178 quintals per acre and is distinguished by early bulking — valuable in Punjab's intensive cropping systems, where clearing the field sooner buys time for the succeeding crop.

Punjab Potato-103, released in 2025, is built around flexibility. It can deliver 354.1 quintals per hectare — about 142 quintals per acre — after just 80 days, or around 180 quintals per acre if left to full maturity. A grower can thus choose between targeting the early market and maximising total yield, a particularly useful trait in vegetable-based rotations. Punjab Potato-104, also from 2025, averages 174 quintals per acre and carries the series' key phytosanitary trait: moderate resistance to late blight, the most destructive disease of the crop. PAU describes it as a medium-to-late, table-purpose variety.

The release strategy reflects how variety choice in Punjab goes far beyond a yield comparison. Potato there is embedded in two- and three-crop rotations with rice, wheat and vegetables, so crop duration and the timing of field clearance can be worth as much as tonnage. PP-101 and especially PP-103 address the scheduling problem; PP-102 serves growers maximising total production; PP-104 offers an option for areas where late blight pressure is recurrent.

The four varieties come from PAU's in-house breeding programme — one of several public breeding efforts that keep India's varietal landscape unusually dynamic at the state level, complementing the nationally dominant Kufri series from ICAR-CPRI, whose four leading varieties cover nearly 75% of the country's potato area. For seed producers and growers in India's north-west, the practical next step is small-plot evaluation of PP-103 and PP-104, the two newest releases, under local blight and market conditions.
