Oryol Region Potato Crop Exceeds Expectations as Phytosanitary Inspections Find No Pests or Diseases
Specialists from the regional office of Rosselkhoznadzor in Oryol Region have completed extensive phytosanitary inspections of potato fields spanning over 6,000 hectares across seven districts, including Dmitrovsky, Kromskoy, Trosnyansky, Mtsensky, Orlovsky, and Khotynetsky. Through soil and plant sampling, as well as pheromone trapping for insect pests, the authorities confirmed that the potato crops are in excellent condition—no diseases or dangerous pests were detected. This clean bill of health comes as a relief to local farmers, especially given that a gold potato nematode infestation was reported earlier this year in a private household plot in Livensky District, a pest capable of destroying up to 80% of yields. The survey results suggest that the region’s potato plantings remain largely protected from major threats.
In 2026, agricultural enterprises and farms in Oryol have dedicated approximately 20,000 hectares to potato cultivation, and when including private household plots, the total area under “second bread” exceeds 100,000 hectares. The positive inspection outcome reinforces the region’s potential for stable production, while the sheer scale of planting indicates that potatoes remain a cornerstone of Oryol’s agricultural economy. However, the isolated nematode case in Livensky serves as a reminder of the persistent risks faced by growers, underscoring the importance of continued monitoring, crop rotation, and quarantine measures to safeguard future harvests.
