Karelia’s Seed Potatoes Selected for Federal-Level French Fry Production as Harvest Begins
The Republic of Karelia has launched its annual vegetable and potato harvest, with a notable portion of the crop destined for federal-level french fry production. According to the regional Ministry of Agriculture, local seed potatoes—particularly from the farm of Nikolai Kontsevoy—are being supplied to the “Vi Fry” plant in Lipetsk Oblast, a major processor of french fries. This season, vegetables and potatoes occupy 179 hectares across Karelia, with the main volumes concentrated in the Sortavala and Olonets districts. Farmer Anatoly Nazarov, one of the first to begin harvesting, cultivates varieties such as “Koroleva Anna,” “Avrora,” and “Gala” alongside beets, carrots, and cabbage on 24.5 hectares, expecting about 400 tonnes of produce. Overall, regional agricultural producers aim to collect roughly 5,000 tonnes of vegetables and potatoes, which will supply local fairs, regional and federal retail chains, and smaller local outlets.
The partnership with “Vi Fry” highlights Karelia’s growing role in the domestic processing industry, leveraging its seed potato quality for high-value end products like french fries. Farmers have expressed satisfaction with this season’s yields, with Nazarov noting good results from early varieties and already preparing fields for the next cycle. While the republic’s total acreage remains modest compared to major agricultural regions, its strategic focus on seed potato production and integration with federal processors adds a distinctive dimension to its agricultural profile, potentially opening new market opportunities and strengthening food supply chains in northwestern Russia.
