Enhancing Potato Production and Market Opportunities

In the Nafke plains of Duhok, Iraq, a new variety of imported potato seed, known as Spectra, is showing promise for local farmers. Cultivated with the goal of boosting potato production for the Iraqi market and potential export, Spectra is characterized by its regular tuber shape, attractive yellow skin, and preferred taste. This variety, introduced by a Netherlands-based company that exports to 80 countries, has been under trial for four years and is now being widely adopted.

Economic Impact and Employment

Local farmer Bayiz Zebari has noted that Spectra potatoes command a higher price point, reflecting their quality and market demand. To manage the harvest, Zebari has employed 160 seasonal workers, highlighting the significant employment opportunities created by this new crop. The harvested potatoes are primarily destined for central and southern Iraq, meeting the high domestic demand. Ahmad Anbari, an Iraqi businessman, underscores this demand, as he transports six to seven truckloads of potatoes daily from the farm.

Anticipated Yield and Market Expansion

The Duhok Agriculture Department anticipates a yield of 500,000 tons of potatoes this year, despite some losses due to exceptional rainfall. Notably, improvements in storage facilities have significantly reduced waste, halving losses from eight to four tons. These advancements in storage and handling are crucial for maintaining the quality and availability of potatoes throughout the year.

Export Potential and Regional Growth

The Kurdistan Regional Government is actively promoting potato exports, which has opened new market opportunities. In August, the UAE imported 300 tons of potatoes and requested an additional 3,000 tons, partly to supply major food chains like McDonald’s. This initiative not only highlights the quality and appeal of Spectra potatoes but also underscores the potential for Duhok’s potato production to reach regional and international markets.

The introduction and successful cultivation of Spectra potatoes mark a significant milestone for farmers in Duhok. By leveraging high-quality seed varieties and improving agricultural practices, the region is poised to enhance its potato production, meet domestic demand, and explore lucrative export opportunities. This progress signals a promising future for the agricultural sector in Duhok and sets a benchmark for other regions aiming to boost their agricultural output and market presence.
