Nagaland is a state in the north-eastern region of India and is home to a rich variety of natural, cultural, and environmental resources. The state has a strong association with potatoes. This hilly region with cool climes is a producer of the organic humble spud.

Aiming to boost organic potato farming and raise its profile, the inaugural Nagaland Potato Festival unfolded at Jakhama village ground in Kohima district on May 10. The festival was organised by The department of Agriculture and supported by Farm Craft Enterprise, in collaboration with The Green Caravan Nagaland and Community Seed Bank, Jakhama, along with several organisations. The showcased potatoes were cultivated between December and January, preceding the paddy planting season. The festival attracted approximately 3000 visitors and featured around 70 stalls.

During the event, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie highlighted the abundant farming prospects available to the local community due to the region’s natural resources. Reflecting on the history of potato cultivation in the area, Sophie noted the Nepali influence on introducing potatoes to Jakhama. He reminisced about the tradition of households growing potatoes in their paddy fields before the paddy planting season began.

Dr. N Sailo, Senior Scientist and head incharge at ICAR CPRI (RS) Shillong, provided insights into the scientific methods of potato cultivation, emphasizing the importance of high-quality seed production to enhance potato yields. He discussed cost-effective seed multiplication techniques such as epical rooted cutting for farmers without access to breeder seeds.

The festival recognized Oasis Women Agri-Allied Cooperative Society, Zhodi Colony, for showcasing the largest potato weighing 450 grams. Dzükuo Radzüla Terrace received accolades for the best stall, while M/s Kelechünu Stall was honored as the top potato stall.

The day-long event featured diverse activities like the sale and exhibition of potatoes and other organic goods from various regions of the state, competitions, traditional games, and musical performances. Prizes included power tillers, grass cutters, and modern agricultural equipment sponsored by partners. The festival was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland, with support from The Green Caravan, Community Seed Bank, Jakhama, Farm Craft Enterprises, and other collaborators.

The event commenced with a keynote address by host Visakunu Tetso, an invocation by Pastor John Zao, and a welcome speech by District Agriculture Officer, Kekhrieletuo Yhome.
