Increase in Areas and Record Harvest Forecasts
The state of Sinaloa in Mexico is expecting a historic potato harvest in 2025, with more than 17,000 hectares planted. This is a significant increase compared to previous years, with a projected yield exceeding 500,000 tons.
The president of the Potato Producers Union in Los Mochis, Jorge Benjamín López Rosas, confirmed that the season is developing as expected, with high yields and a significant number of jobs in rural areas.
“The harvest of potatoes destined for industrial processing, such as for Sabritas and Barcel, has already begun. This year, 50% to 60% of the harvest will go to processing, and the rest to the domestic market.” High productivity and uncertainty in late plantings
- The average yield is 30-31 tons per hectare, which corresponds to a good level of productivity.
- However, uncertainty remains regarding late plantings, as their final yield figures are not yet known.
Prices and market conditions - Exact prices have not yet been determined, but they are expected to be above 11-12 pesos (0.54-0.59 USD) per kilo.
- The final price of the product will depend on the market situation in the coming weeks.
Weather factors and risk of cold snaps
Weather conditions have been favorable for crop development so far, as there have been no severe frosts. However, producers remain wary, as there are still months ahead when cold fronts may arrive.
“So far, development is going well, but the most difficult months are ahead in terms of possible cold fronts,” said Lopez Rosas.
Potatoes for the fresh market and export prospects
- The mass harvest of potatoes for the fresh market will begin on February 20.
- A significant increase in supply is expected in local and national markets.
- Sinaloa is consolidating its position as one of Mexico’s leading potato producing regions.
With acreage growing by 21.15% in 2025, total production could increase by 75%, depending on the final harvest.
