Karelia Launches 2026 Vegetable and Potato Harvest with Promising Yields Across 179 Hectares

The Republic of Karelia has officially kicked off its 2026 harvesting campaign for vegetables and potatoes, with farmers in the Sortavala and Olonets districts—the region’s primary production hubs—leading the way. Early-maturing crops such as zucchini, early potatoes, and beets are already being gathered, while cabbage and carrots will follow as they reach full ripeness. In total, 179 hectares are devoted to these crops this year. One standout operation is Anatoly Nazarov’s farm, which cultivates potato varieties including “Koroleva Anna,” “Avrora,” “Gala,” and “Red Lady,” alongside beets, carrots, and cabbage across 24.5 hectares, with an expected yield of approximately 400 tonnes. The farm is currently harvesting its earliest potato varieties while simultaneously preparing soil for the next planting cycle.

Across the republic, agricultural producers aim to collect about 5,000 tonnes of potatoes and vegetables this season. Once harvested, the produce will reach consumers through local fairs, federal and regional retail chains, smaller local shops, and direct farm sales. The campaign reflects Karelia’s steady commitment to local food production despite its northern climate and limited acreage, with farmers emphasizing timely fieldwork and crop diversification to maximize output. The early progress and positive grower reports suggest a stable season ahead, reinforcing the role of regional agriculture in supplying fresh produce to both local markets and broader distribution networks.
