An Indian Potato Success Story for the Global Stage.

For international readers interested in the vibrant agricultural landscape of India, a recent Potato Field Day event held at Siddhi Farm (Siddhi Cold Storage) in Gujarat exemplifies the power of inter-state collaboration and the pursuit of excellence in Potato Farming. This gathering, a confluence of farmers, seed growers, and agricultural experts, showcased the promising potential of Haryana’s seed potatoes in Gujarat’s unique soil conditions, offering valuable lessons for potato cultivation worldwide. The event was Organized by International Potato Center (CIP), Department of Horticulture, Haryana and Sardar Dantiwada Agricultural University (SDAU)

Imagine a field day where the vibrant green of potato foliage meets the eager eyes of farmers from two distinct Indian states: Gujarat, known for its entrepreneurial spirit and the Power House of Potato Processing in India, and Haryana, a Powerhouse of Potato seed production. This wasn’t just another agricultural event; it was a bridge being built, connecting seed quality with cultivation prowess.

The heart of the event was the demonstration plots, established with seed samples sent from Haryana in October 2024. These plots, meticulously cultivated, revealed the adaptability and performance of various potato varieties under Gujarat’s specific climate and soil. The results were nothing short of remarkable.

Among the star performers was Kufri Mohan, a variety that showcased exceptional vigor and yield, quickly becoming a favorite among the attending farmers. Close on its heels were Kufri Thar 2 and Kufri Karan, further solidifying the potential of Haryana’s seed potatoes in Gujarat. The diverse array of varieties showcased, including K. Uday, K. Pukhraj, K. Frysona, K. Himalini, K. Chipsona 1, LR, and Santana, provided a comprehensive look at the quality and diversity of Haryana’s seed production.

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed experts from the International Potato Center (CIP), including Dr. Kadian, Ms. Deepa, and Dr. Pooja, lending their global expertise to the local context. Dr. D. G. Patel, Station Incharge at the Potato Research Station in Deesa, expertly guided the proceedings, while representatives from industry giants like Hyfun, Chill Fill, and Iscon Balaji contributed valuable insights into market dynamics and processing potential.

Mr. Sandeep Saini, the visionary owner of Siddhi Farm, played a crucial role in bringing this collaboration to fruition. His firsthand experience with Haryana-sourced seeds from the previous season served as a powerful endorsement, inspiring confidence among fellow farmers. His testimonial about the superior quality and performance of these seeds highlighted the tangible benefits of this cross-state partnership.

Beyond the technical demonstrations, the field day fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas and experiences. Farmers from both states engaged in meaningful discussions about market challenges, seed quality, and potential areas for collaboration. This direct farmer-to-farmer interaction proved invaluable, highlighting the importance of sharing knowledge and best practices.

For Haryana’s seed growers, this event presented a unique opportunity to expand their market reach into Gujarat, a region with a growing demand for high-quality potato seeds. Conversely, Gujarat’s farmers gained access to a reliable source of superior seeds, enabling them to enhance their productivity and profitability.
