The farm of the Novgorod farmer Ivan Pireev started collecting early potatoes, they said today, July 26, in the regional Ministry of Agriculture. The total planting area of this root crop on the farm in 2022 was 115 hectares. Early occupies 10 hectares.
It is planned to collect at least 300 centners per hectare. This first new potato is already expected in Novgorod budgetary institutions, retail chains and small shops.
While farmers are harvesting early potatoes from the fields, specialists from the Russian Agricultural Center are monitoring the crops to determine the quality of the future harvest. During the flowering period, they study the planting of potatoes, which have yet to be harvested from the fields. This is the so-called approbation of crops, during which the varietal purity of the potato, the quality of the shoots and what harvest is expected are determined.
A variety from the elite category can be transferred to the first reproduction for its further preservation. Such work is carried out by specialists of the Rosselkhoztsentr throughout the region. At the moment, 1223.71 hectares of seed crops have been tested and registered, including more than 880 hectares of potatoes, 133 hectares of winter crops, 210 hectares of spring crops.
