As spring plowing gets underway in Huohong Township, the Shunhong Potato Planting Cooperative in Maoshajing Village is pioneering an optimized agricultural structure. Building on last year’s successful harvest, the township is systematically promoting a 500-mu (approximately 33-hectare) crop rotation system combining potatoes with high-altitude vegetables to maximize land use efficiency. The cooperative is focusing on popular varieties such as Huishu 19, Xuechuanhong, and V7, which have proven successful in the market. According to合作社负责人 Liu Shouliang, last year’s yield of Huishu 19 reached 3.2 tons per mu, attracting repeat buyers from Guizhou and Guangxi who purchase directly from the field. The region’s cool climate and superior soil quality produce potatoes with excellent texture and reliable quality.
Technical support plays a crucial role in this initiative. Agricultural specialists from the county and township levels provide comprehensive guidance throughout the planting process, from variety selection and late blight control to scientific fertilization. Notably, the base is also conducting variety trials for 14 provincial-level varieties and demonstrating 25 new varieties, alongside two sets of fertilizer experiments for green, high-yield technologies. Looking ahead, the township’s agricultural development service center plans to enhance agricultural machinery promotion and infrastructure, including expanding irrigation access to further boost productivity. With 35,000 mu already planted with early-spring potatoes, the steady implementation of the 500-mu rotation model is strengthening Huohong’s reputation in the potato industry while laying a solid foundation for a robust harvest and increased farmer incomes.
