The Rostov Regional branch of the FGBU “Rosselkhozcenter” reminds agricultural producers about the importance of strict compliance with new regulatory requirements that came into force on September 1, 2024. Under the updated rules issued by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, absolutely all batches of seed potatoes must now undergo mandatory diagnostics for viral and bacterial diseases. The quality and safety of planting material remain the key factors ensuring high yields and profitability in domestic potato farming. To conduct these high-precision tests, the Testing Center of the Rostov branch employs real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) – the most advanced and reliable laboratory diagnostic method available today, capable of detecting hidden threats even before the tubers are planted in the soil.

During laboratory control, specialists test seed material for the presence of dangerous viruses, including X, Y-RV, M, S, A-RV, as well as the potato leafroll virus. In addition, they screen for DNA of Dickeya bacteria – the causal agents of “blackleg” disease – and verify the complete absence of genetically modified organisms in accordance with Federal Law No. 454-FZ “On Seed Production.” All categories of planting material are subject to mandatory control, from initial breeding stocks to reproductive seed potatoes. Experts emphasize that timely PCR diagnostics are not merely a formality but a reliable safeguard for agricultural businesses. Verified seed material helps preserve varietal qualities, ensures healthy germination, and protects fields from dangerous infections, while neglecting testing risks both crop losses and administrative penalties. Caring for the future harvest begins with a single tuber, and undergoing timely testing means confirming product quality and securing the farm’s future. Agricultural producers can contact their local Rosselkhozcenter branches for further information on testing procedures.
