Global: Hybrid True Potato Seed Reaches First Commercial Markets
Hybrid true potato seed has reached commercial release in Kenya, promising disease-free, easily stored planting material shipped in grams instead of tonnes.
True potato seed (TPS) — growing potatoes from botanical seed rather than tubers — has reached commercial release: in 2024 Kenya’s KEPHIS approved three Solynta hybrids, and Bejo launched its first TPS hybrid in 2022, as hybrid breeding delivers the uniformity that earlier TPS attempts lacked.
The potential advantages are transformative: seed that is disease-free by nature, easy to store, and shipped in grams instead of tonnes — 25 g of seed replaces about 2,500 kg of tubers, and freed from the multiplication cycles that slow variety deployment and spread tuber-borne disease.
For developing regions where seed tuber systems fail farmers — degeneration, transport costs, storage losses — hybrid TPS could leapfrog infrastructure gaps the way mobile phones bypassed landlines.

Challenges remain agronomic: TPS crops need different establishment techniques than tuber planting, and first-generation field performance must match the reliability growers expect from certified tubers.
Field tests have run in Kenya, Egypt, Namibia and South Africa, and Bayer and Solynta have partnered to bring hybrid TPS to Kenya and India.
